Description and History of Site:-
Late C19 two-and three-storey brick buildings empty and derelict in 1994. Residential in 2012. Hand forge chimneys in Ball Street and a splendid plaster sign on the gable by Ball Street Bridge. Occupied in 1881 by Alfred Beckett & Sons, manufacturers of steel, saws, files, engineers' tools, machine knives &c. Also cast steel engineers' hammers. They used the “Matchless†trademark.This company continued at the Brooklyn Works up to 1967 when they were bought out by the Tempered Spring Company Ltd of Sheffield. In the 1990s the then disused works were converted to mixed residential and commercial uses.
