Take Off Stone

Description and History of Site:-
Mortimer Road was part of a commercially unsuccessful turnpike from Grindleford in Derbyshire over the moors to Penistone. Built in the 1770s with steep ascents and descents (as here) given up early in l9th century. Stone indicates where an extra horse helping heavy loads uphill was to be unhitched. In west verge 200 yards south of crossroads. Above 1025ft contour. See also a similar stone 100yds north of Strines Inn (SK 223 907).
