Description and History of Site:-
The original workings have been subsumed within a later and larger quarry hole which survives with small parts of one working face visible. No millstone roughouts were seen. There is but one archival reference known by this contributor, namely from 1257 when Roger Pigott of Melmerby granted to his overlord, Ralph de Middleham, in fee millstones from the quarry at Melmerby for his mills in Richmondshire as well as the pair of millstones he was already entitled to take for his corn mill in Melmerby village. This shows it was a commercial operation.
