Rylstone Fell

Description and History of Site:-
There are several small and more prominent outcrops of gritstone on the western side of the moor, some of which display signs of having been worked with pre- and post-1800 tooling visible. No roughouts have been located but the heather cover is dense so some may be hiding. A secondary source states that in the medieval era tenants of Rylstone manor were required to provide millstones to the manorial corn mill and that source claims to have seen two roughouts, one finished and one part worked in different parts of the area. Rather than its having been a commercial production site it was probably used ad hoc when replacement stones were needed. No sources have been found other than the secondary one mentioned in 4A.
