Description and History of Site:-
Lower Howgate Edge grits are exposed along the north-facing edge of Pen-y-ghent Side and in several places workings have cut back into the strata horizontally; there are also surface outcrops where millstones and dimension stone have been roughed out. Shallow delphs extend for c. 100m along the edge centred on SD8387 7465 at 626m AOD; at SD8445 7542 (20m long);and at SD8414 7516 (an opencut delph 3m x 2m). There are two workmen's shelters, one created out of bedrock 1m x 800mm with a maximum height of 900mm, the other built into a quarried outcrop but now collapsed.
There are two abandoned millstone roughouts, one early stage (1.1m diameter) and one advanced and chocked with smaller stones (diameter 1.5m, thickness 350mm, eye diameter 200mm. Nothing at all is known of the history of the workings.
