Description and History of Site:-
It is a deep (c. 30m) deep quarry hole with no ramps down into it so all stone was lifted out by crane. All four sides are vertical and the east face has been revetted using very large stone blocks for the upper section. It is impossible (without climbing gear) to access the interior. It was exploiting Lower Brimham Grits.
It produced edge runner pulping stone roughouts which were finished off in a stone yard in Pateley Bridge for export in the early 20th century to Canada, Norway and Sweden for their pulping industry. Prior to 1902 it also produced freestone products. It was initially leased from the Yorke Estate and later the Ingilby Estate but no early dates have been confirmed. Middle Tongue was leased from 1891 for 10 years by Arthur Thackwray, who also operated Hope Quarry (landscaped and no longer extant). From 1902 it was leased for 21 years by Jonathan and Ackroyd Jennings, stone merchants from Pateley Bridge; hencefortn it concentrated on pulping stones and the quarry was shut down in 1934. After 1920 it was known as Bewerley Quarry.
