Description and History of Site:-
The Millstone Grit (Lower Howgate Edge Sandstone) beds outcrop in the uppermost part of the Ingleborough massif and the roughouts were clearly sourced from these beds, or from displaced boulders below, eg among the chaos of Falls Foot. At the foot of the steep slopes there are six roughouts abandoned among the turf and heather, and one within Falls Foot, broken and partly covered by other rocks. It is clear that the roughouts were simply rolled downhill from where they were shaped and they landed where they landed.
Diameters range from 930mm to 1.6m thicknesses from 160-280mm.
In addition, ten workmen's shelters have been logged, some with a corbelled roof, others mere windbreaks. Only one written source has been located and this is from 1581: the miller or mill owner from Hornby corn mill travelled to Ingleborough Fell to buy a pair of millstones at a cost of 26s.
