Description and History of Site:-
Water Tower in reinforced concrete, reservoir and pumping station. At the time of construction, said to be the largest water tower in Europe.
The water tower was commenced in 1953 and went into service in 1957. A reservoir and pumping station (2011) were later also built on the site. Originally fed from Acomb Landing (NYK00393) water treatment works (WTW), in 1991 a pipeline was installed from Elvington WTW to supply water in case of a failure at Acomb. A new pumping station was additionally constructed on the site in 2012.
