Cawood Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
Iron with timber cutwaters to central piers and gallery. 5 bays of segmental-arched girders with lattice work and railings between forming parapet supporting horizontal girders at road level. Central bay of greatest height and span opens by revolving on a large disc supported by 8 columns. [From the listing description].
Swing Bridge, built to replace the earlier ferry crossing of the Ouse. Opened 31st July 1872 by the Cawood Bridge Company. Initially a toll bridge. During particularly heavy flooding in December 2015, the Ouse flowed over the deck of the Bridge. Strengthened (increasing its bearing capacity from 7.5 to 10 tonnes) and repainted in 2017 at a cost of £1 million.
