Description and History of Site:-
Public road and drainage, never used. After the arrival of the Scarborough and Whitby Railway (1884) through the village then known as 'Peak', plans for a 'new town', intended to rival Scarborough as a holiday resort, were drawn up in 1897. Roads, drains and mains water supply were constructed and the land was divided into 1500 plots for building and offered for sale. The site was renamed 'Ravenscar' at this time.
Unfortunately, there were several impediments to the success of this venture. The railway itself was not particularly popular or reliable, the site offered no easy access to the sea and there was nothing which could reasonably be described as a beach. Most of the building plots were not taken up and the town was never built. The developers' "Peak Estate Company" was bankrupt by 1911.
Hammond Road is one of the extant network of roads constructed in anticipation of the development, named after William Hammond a local benefactor and previous owner of 'Peak House' which later became the Raven Hall Hotel (still operating in 2017).
