Description and History of Site:-
A linear open quarry cut into the hillside that worked strata within the Millstone Grit Group. There are large discard piles and the remains of an open-fronted stone-built dressing shed and a possible small cabin or tool store. One large, displaced block has a circular wheel design etched into one face which may have been an apotropaic symbol (to keep evil spirits at bay) or a template for creating part of a circular pillar. It is believed that this quarry was the source of quoins, mullions and other large dimension stone for the building of Bolton Castle in 1378-79.
