Description and History of Site:-
The bridge at Over Dinsdale was built about 1850 bythe Surtees family it was a wrought iron trussed beam bridge. It had four 15.24m spans supported on masonry piers. The object was to provide a means for the workers on their estate to attend St John's Church on the Durham side of the river. The bridge was only capable of carrying two tonnes and was operated as a toll bridge until it was taken over in 1955 by the North Riding County Council. The trussed beams of the original bridge were then replaced by broad flanged steel beams rolled at the Cargo Fleet Iron Works in Middlesbrough. A concrete deck was cast over the beams which enabled the bridge to carry a single line of traffic and a footpath. It was further strengthened in 1993 to enable it to meet modern traffic requirements. This was achieved by welding the ends of the beams together to make them continuous and by providing a new composite concrete deck.
