Description and History of Site:-
The railway bridge at Croft which now carries the east coast main line was designed by Henry Welsh and originally built in 1840 for the Great North of England Railway as part of their line from York to Newcastle The four 18m masonry arches are skewed at 50 degrees. This means that the piers are not square to the rail track but are built at an oblique angle so that they are parallel to the river and offer least resistance to the flow.
