Description and History of Site:-
In 1853 the Spa Wood Mine was part of same lease, held by the Weardale Coal & Iron Co., that included the first Belmont Mine. Production started in 1864 and continued until 1886.
In 1890 Sir B. Samuelson & Co took over the lease and started production via the Slapewath Shaft (NZ 64664 14710) before in 1897 opening drifts in the valley near the Slapewarth Viaduct.
In 1917 the company was taken over by Dorman Long & Co who continued to work the mine until 1930.
Remains include stables, workshops, block house, powder house, two fan houses, electric sub-station and drift entrances. On private land although the Cleveland Way passes just above it.
