Larpool Viaduct (Whitby Railway Viaduct)

Description and History of Site:-
Larpool Viaduct. Over R. Esk at Whitby. Built 1882-4 for the Scarborough and Whitby Railway, which was closed in 1965. The thirteen arched brick structure is 279 m long, 37 m high. It spans the R Esk and the Esk Valley Railway. The caissons and arches of the foundations are particularly impressive. The viaduct is now owned by Sustrans and carries "The Cinder Track" (walk/cycleway along the former railway line). Jane Hatcher commented in 1972: Giant brick structure leaping over Esk above railway line running along river which is still open. Surprisingly narrow necks where piers spring. Bases of piers project on west side and are pierced by round arches.
