Description and History of Site:-
In 1981 the Panel for Historical Engineering Works noted: Originally on the main East Coast Railway line between London, York and Edinburgh, the bridge now only carries the railway line to Hull. This bridge replaced a cast iron bascule bridge opened in 1840 on the Hull and Selby Railway. The current five span bridge, opened in 1891, was designed by Thomas Elliot Harrison, built by Nelson & Co, York, with ironwork by the Cleveland Bridge Co. and hydraulic swing machinery by Sir W G Armstrong, Mitchell & Co. The bridge carried the east coast main line across the Ouse when the old route via Knottingley was shortened.
