Folly Gill Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Superb huge mill. 10 bays 6 have been added. Three storeys and loft. Stone surrounds with projecting sills to quite large windows of 9 panes top 3 opening. Slate roof. Built into hillside. Wide building presumably a row of iron columns inside building. Wheel was apparently exterior. Small paned metal framed taller rectangular window to loft in west gable. Gable plain apart from garage door and loading door and gantry beam. Remains of an older mill behind house. First recorded as a flax mill in 1818, owned by Christopher Smith who who also spun flax at Low Mill, West End. Leased to Francis Thorp of New York Mill in 1838. Still working in 1861 (William Grainger) and in the late 1870's producing linen yarn for cloth and sewing thread.

Gutted by fire in 1884, rebuilt, spinning restarted in 1891 by James Atkinson. Believed to have finally closed between the two World Wars.
