Cleveland Tontine Inn

Description and History of Site:-
Inn built in 1804 on the new turnpike road from Yarm to Thirsk. Erected by public subscription and thanks to the London to Sunderland Mail Coach, it became a popular resting place for travellers. It became a private house in the 1930s but reverted to its original use after WWII. A tontine was a sort of early life insurance policy. A group of subscribers each put in an amount of money and the whole pot went to the last one still alive.
