Bishop Monkton Mill

Description and History of Site:-
A gorgeous white stone building in fine ashlar work with large sumptuous mill-house across road. A rectangular building water fed from farm at rear. Huge wheel house probably breast shot wheel (gone). Typical classical rectangular block at far end square addition nearer road. 3 storeys plus loft. Slate roof. Reminiscent of Tadcaster area. Flax mill built late 18C possibly using old site of corn-mill. Fairly soon afterwards e.g. C 1800 extended at front. More recently whole lot became corn mill. Local magnesian limestone as at Knaresborough (Hatcher, 1973).
