Marrick Lower Smelt Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Built round central chimney dry stone with brick section half-way up which appears to be original facing material as opposed to a lining. Shallow pitched gables. Leat was probably wooden little stone pillars lead across field from the dams. Single storey building. Two furnaces. Also known as Marrick Low or New Mill. The present mill is of uncertain date, but probably around the end of the 1830's. A much earlier mill, Sayer's Mill - probably the first large scale lead smelting operation in Swaledale, stood on the same site from c1574 to c1700. Not much used by 1858, improvements were made in 1862-3 with the installation of a 20 foot diameter water wheel, and the extension of the flues to the chimney at Marrick Old (or High) Mill.

The surrounding area, including Marrick Old Mill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
