Description and History of Site:-
A 1,375ft (419m) pier with extensive pier head constructed by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and opened on the 1st March 1848 for their ferry service to Hull. Ferry services ended on the 24th June 1981 following the opening of the Humber Bridge.
The pontoon at the end of the pier was badly damaged and sunk during a severe storm on the 18-19th October 1869 and in 1895 the pier and station at New Holland were destroyed by fire and rebuilt.
In 1923-28 the original timber pier structure was replaced using concrete-encased steel beams while the upstream and downstream arms of the pierhead were replaced in 1935-39 and 1946-49 respectively. The decking supporting the upstream arm of the pier head was a very early structural use of pre-cast pre-stressed concrete in the country.
Following closure, the station was demolished and the pier is now used for handling bulk cargoes.
