Whelp Stone Crag

Description and History of Site:-
Whelp Stone Crag has prominent rock outcrops - Brennand Grit - both on the west and south-west edges and on the summit plateau and there is ample evidence as tooling marks of stone working across the whole hill, plus two sets of grafitti and two abandoned millstone roughouts plus a workmen's shelter.

Shelter (SD76016 59287) made up of three massive blocks with a rough drystone wall making it windproof, 2.4m high by 6m wide, roofed with two large boulders.

near-complete millstone roughout (SD75849 59092), diameter 1.4m, eye diameter 210mm, thickness 260mm.

broken millstone roughout (SD75927 59090), diameter 1.53m, thickness at the centre 280mm, thickness at the edge 220mm; the eye is cut to depth of 100-180mm.

grafitti (SD76034 59273) on an earthfast boulder above the shelter carved into a vertical face with TR . FEB . 7. 78 (or maybe 18)

grafitti (SD75860 59094) etched on the sloping face of an earthfast boulder with TR . MA ... (illegible) Nothing is known but the grafitti probably date work here.
