Description and History of Site:-
Brennand Great Hill is a vast open tract of Millstone Grit moorland and production sites have been located between the 380m and 411m contours, Much of it is heather covered or masked by rough grassland with a number of gritstone outcrops, the most prominent of which is called Millers House (SD622 555).
Two significant production sites were located and logged - Millers House itself and a smaller outcrop 420m or so to the south-west (SD620 552).
Millers House
Nine millstone roughouts were logged here, all early-stage, as well as negatives and tooling marks. Diameters range from 1.3m to 1.7m, thicknesses from 200-280mm. Two have the eye partially cut through.
Secondary outcrop
Seven millstone roughouts were logged here, all but one in their early stages of working. Diameters range from 860mm to 1.85m, thicknesses from 200-220mm. In addition there is a stone hewers' shelter, 940mm wide by 1.2m deep and max internal height of 900mm, backing onto an earthfast block. There is also another earthfast (or bedrock?) block with a line of wedge pits cut across its face - the first stage in producing a roughout.
