Seaham Old Dock (Marina)

Description and History of Site:-
The Georgian North Dock. Designed by eminent engineer William Chapman for the 3rd Marquis of Londonderry for the shipping of coal. The foundation stone laid on 28 November 1828 marked the beginning of the town of Seaham harbour.

Linsley (2011): 'Seaham north dock, gouged out of the magnesian limestone as part of a much larger artificial harbour creation, was opened in 1831. It was used primarily for the export of coal. The north dock is now undergoing change in a £3 million regeneration scheme, to include a marina for seventy-eight vessels, new automatic lock gates, and a utility building to provide offices, workshops, café, public toilets etc.'
