Description and History of Site:-
West Dow Crag is a north facing Sandstone ridge with large exposed blocks of rock along the rim and scree/boulder slopes below. The outcrops were worked for producing millstone roughouts of which four abandoned ones remain in situ. Diameters range from 1.3m to 1.7m and thicknesses from 210-300mm. One slab next to a roughout has etched into it "T" and "GB", presumably initials of two of the stone hewers. All stages in the production cycle are seen in the roughouts.
