Beverley Gas Works (site only)

Caption :- Detail of the casting in the base of the iron lamp post outside St Mary's Church, Beverley. Malam's posts typically had cast into them a lion's head on a shield above two olive branches, a design influenced by Egyptian motifs. The British had become interested in art from ancient Egypt following the defeat of Napoleon, when a fashion for such designs became popular, suggested by exhibits in the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly in the 1820s.
