Hightown Glassworks

Description and History of Site:-
On the site of an earlier (1850s) glassworks and later (1870s) brickworks. John Lumb and Co. acquired the site in 1902 and built a large gas-fired regenerative glass furnace. Subsequently, the works introduced early examples of semi-automatic bottle making machines. The works was bought by the United Glass company, together with others in the immediate area, in 1937. Bottle glass manufacture continued on the site until 1985.

The site was investigated and recorded by Malton Archaeological Projects in 2007 prior to its development into housing. Glass waste recovered during this excavation has been analysed (see reference 1) and it was possible to identify glass from both the early (c1855-1874) and later (1902-1985) phases of production.
