Description and History of Site:-
Covered service reservoir and water treatment works. Originally constructed in 1843 for the Leeds Waterworks Company as an open storage reservoir receiving water from Eccup reservoir via the Blackmoor Tunnel (WYK01093) and Seven Arches aqueduct (WYK00247). From this reservoir, water was initially sent down to the service reservoir at Woodhouse Moor (WYK01023). This supply chain replaced the earlier supply pumped up to the city of Leeds from the River Aire at Pitfall Mill (WYK01094), an arrangement dating from the last years of the 18th century. In 1860 and in 1873, the open reservoir was converted into filter beds, partly in response to the expanding water supply infrastructure including the North Lane pumping station (WYK01040) in Headingley. More recently, the water treatment functions at Weetwood have been modernised and currently (2018), the water storage capacity is significantly less than in the past, the site acting predominantly as a treatment and distribution facility.
