Description and History of Site:-
The pottery just appeared like a barn and attached farm buildings. The pottery reverted to farm use before the buildings were converted for residential use. Samuel Catherall, from Swilling Hill Pottery, set up pottery around 1807/8 where he made earthenware until his death in 1852, when it passed to his widow Hannah for a year before it was settled upon his son in 1853, John who continued until 1891. The pottery was then leased to Nicholas Taylor from 1891 until 1898 when there was a dispute with Ezra Catherall, John's son, about maintaining the buildings. As a result of this Nicholas walked away leaving Ezra to run pottery with Edwin Firth actually doing the potting, until 1900 when Nicholas returned. He remained there until 1907 when economic circumstances forced him to leave. After that various potters worked there until closure around 1923.
