Woodhouse Service Reservoir

Description and History of Site:-
Covered service reservoir. Built in 1841 by the then recently formed (1837) Leeds Joint-Stock Waterworks Company (a kind of early public-private initiative) to receive water from the storage reservoir at Weetwood (WYK01057) which was itself supplied from Eccup (WYK02368) via the Blackmoor tunnel (WYK01093), Seven Arches Aqueduct (WYK00247) and an open conduit. In August 1841, 800 gallons per minute were supplied to Woodhouse Moor and then distributed to the old service reservoirs located at St Johns and at Albion Street within the city. It was originally uncovered and extended over almost the whole eastern edge of Woodhouse Moor. Enlarged and covered over in 1865. Partly rebuilt using reinforced concrete in 1952. Currently (2018) the reservoir consists of only the southernmost third, approximately, of its original extent.
