Craven Hall Hill Quarry

Description and History of Site:-
Though it is named as a 'Quarry' there is no evidence on the ground of any quarry hole but it takes the form of a low ridge, a continuation of Low Ridging, extending for 150m north-south by 40m east west. The OS First Edition marks it as a limestone quarry but the bedrock geology here is sandstone/gritstone. It has clearly been heavily delved for limestone cobbles entrained within the glacial till. No ground evidence of a kiln was seen. This industry began at least in the 17th century, and the name is marked on OS First Edition mapping.
