Bailey Hall Mill

Description and History of Site:-
This five storey flour mill and four storey warehouse block survives largely intact from its 1880s condition, though with a substantially re-inforced internal structure. The original octagonal chimney stands 196ft high and features lancet decorative features and a cast iron oversailer with copper and wrought iron fixings. A huge name panel, incised in stone, and intended to promote the name of the Flour Society, overlooks Navigation Road and is visible from Halifax Railway Station. The mill had, originally, its own canal arm for unloading directly into the mill yard, which passed beneath the warehouse at the southern end of the site and also the Navigation Company's warehouse at the end of the wharf. The blocked up archway at the end of the yard can be seen through the gates in Bailey Hall Road. Bailey Hall Flour Mill was erected in 1879 by the Halifax Flour Society. It was their third mill, and was designed by Halifax architect Richard Horsfall, the contractor being Richard Oates, both of whom were also responsible for a number of local textile mills. The site had previously been occupied by an earlier mill, used by Messrs. W. Hatton & Co. for worsted spinning, and Bailey Hall Dyeworks operated by Thomas Crossley and Sons, owners of the nearby Albion Mill (WYK771). In 1886 a serious fire occurred at the Flour Society's mill causing extensive damage to the screening section at the warehouse end of the premises which were quickly rebuilt. In 1916, the business was sold to the Co-operative Wholesale Society which in time concentrated its milling at their Sowerby Bridge factory. In 1922, the Bailey Hall site was sold to Patons and Baldwins Ltd. manufacturers of knitting wools at the Halifax end of their business. The site passed to John Mackintosh and Sons Ltd. in 1952 and was used for wrapping and packing of confectionery, and later for tin box manufacture. The building is presently unused, but is retained by Mackintosh's successors, Nestle UK Ltd.
