High Mill or Patrick's Mill

Description and History of Site:-
It can be difficult to attribute references to specific mills in West End as they were close together and references often only specified that the mill was at West End. The mill was changed over to flax spinning in the 1820s.
In 1841 the four storey mill measured 90 feet by 29 feet inside and had a 45 foot water wheel.
Production probably stopped about 1848 when the cotton spinning machinery, which had only been installed the year before was removed to Addingham Low Mill. Shown on the 6" OS map of 1848 a little to the west of Thruscross Church, that site is now beneath Thruscross reservoir. The same map notes 'High Mill' further west at SE 1357 5816. This mill was built by the partners at Low Mill in 1800 as they expanded their cotton spinning business. As it was higher upstream from Low Mill it became High Mill, but as the manager at Low Mill, John Patrick married John Walker's daughter and ran the mill from 1812 it became known as Patrick's Mill. In 1822 he bought the mill with his partners, Stephen Smith of West End, William Robinson of Knaresborough and Robert Dearlove of Knaresborough. This partnership was dissolved in 1829. At some point the mill was changed over to spin flax. Robinson and Dearlove had been partners with John Marshall in Leeds, one of the country's leading flax spinners.
Robinson continued flax spinning until 1836 when he was bankrupt, but John Patrick still owned the mill. Joseph Moore then took the mill, but was bankrupt a year later. It was then leased by Henry Hogg.
Thomas Lister, who had been a chandler in Addingham, took the mill in 1847 and started to install cotton spinning machinery, but when Low Mill in Addingham became available a year or so later he moved the machinery there. Textile production may then have ceased.
