Description and History of Site:-
On the NER Whitby to Loftus line. Originally started by the Whitby, Redcar and Middlesbrough Union Railway in 1866, but construction ran into technical and financial difficulties and the company had to be bailed out by the NER who built the 282m long tunnel. The line was not finished until 1883 at a cost way above the estimate. The southern portal is inaccessible located part way down the cliff where the line ran a short distance along a ledge before entering the Sandsend tunnel.
