Scarborough Railway Bridge

Description and History of Site:-
The Scarborough Railway Bridge was built in 1845 for a new line carrying passengers to the coast (see NRM blog for drawing of 1845 bridge). The girders were a combination of cast iron girders with wrought iron tie rods. After the collapse of a similar bridge over the River Dee in 1847 strut supports were installed underneath the bridge. In 1875 the bridge underwent major rebuild as part of works for the new station during which the girders were replaced by girders of wrought iron construction. The tracks were raised by four feet and a footpath provided along the south side. In 2015 a £6m project renovated the bridge by replacing the deck, tracks and a walkway on the original masonry piers.
