Sandsend Tunnel

Description and History of Site:-
The Sandsend tunnel which is 1511m long is part of the NER Whitby to Loftus line which had three tunnels (Sandsend, Kettleness, and Grinkle) and five viaducts (Upgang, Newholm, East Row, Sandsend and Staithes) on the sixteen mile length of the line. Started in 1866 the construction ran into technical and financial difficulties and had to be rerouted. It was not completed until 1883 at a cost way above the estimate. The line was closed to all traffic on 5th May 1958. At the western portal (NZ 8419 1493) about 2m of the roof collapsed in 2008.
