Skeldergate Bonding Warehouse

Description and History of Site:-
Bonding Warehouse AD 1875 on gable facing Skeldergate Bridge. Two buildings attached with similar motifs. Frontage to Skeldergate Bridge.

Designed by George Styan the City Surveyor in 1872, the building was completed on 26 May 1873. The buildings is about 90 ft by 60 ft with brick side walls and a line of 8 in diameter cast iron columns supporting seven bays of
jack arched floor. There are three windows either side of the central entrance from the river and a hipped roof on king post trusses. The building was extended towards Skeldergate Bridge in 1875 this being two storeys about 75 ft square in two portions one 30 ft wide in two bays with 5½ in diameter cast iron columns and the other 45 ft wide with 7 in diameter columns.

Initially wines and spirits were stored, it was but later used dry goods such as tea and coffee. The last boat to unload there is reported to have been a cargo of hazel nuts in 1956.

Cast iron work is by Bagshaw and Son of Batley. In 1973 the northern part was used as 'Rowntree's Warehouse SK2', later used as a club and music venue. Derelict through most of the 2000's, Converted to flats and office space in 2012-2013.
