Mill of 3 storeys one probably added of three bays one hidden by older half of millhouse. Mill built into hillside, one storey less at back wheel was high breast pitch back or overshot. Arched opening to pentrough and one in side bases in floor of mill-like imposts. Also large stone slab like medieval altar. Worked until the Second World War. Was originally a series of dams on top of hill behind mill, replaced by dam on common for reasons unknown. Wheel house roofed with half hip. Surprisingly wide wheel house and axle base would make the shaft even a wider span. Rubble and slab construction. Some old timber beams but no machinery left. Two arched windows put into side of upper storey of wheel house. No sign of it ever having been a single storey lean to. On plan of c1790 as Mr Harker's corn mill. Jos Harker had public house opposite. Belonged to the Lords of Arkendale. Mill noted on inventory of 1605. Used by same family ever since - Heard or Hurd. House nearby occupied by Edmund Cooper, historian. Miller operated a carriers service taking locally produced lead down to Richmond and bringing back corn from market.
