Sandsend Cement Kiln

Description and History of Site:-
Small rectangular stone-built kiln owned by the Earl of Mulgrave and operated from 1811 until c1936 to calcine "cement stone" nodules found in the alum quarries to produce an early form of Roman or hydraulic cement. It is possible that these were also obtained from the drifts into the hillside below Deepgrove Farm. The machinery of the water driven grinding mill has been removed but the calcining kiln to the rear is virtually intact. -
