New River Head

Description and History of Site:-
Original terminus of the New River, 1613; whence water distributed to City of London in elm pipes, (replaced by cast iron from 1811). Inner Pond, 1613. Original terminal basin, 60m (200 ft) diameter, drained 1914. Part of embankment remains, reconstructed 1841, incorporating cast-iron sheet piles. Devil's Conduit, medieval stone conduit house re-erected here c. 1927 from Queen Sq. area of Holborn. Outer Pond, surrounding Inner Pond, mid C17th. Converted to filter beds 1856, last used 1946. Portions of bank remain. Oak Room, 1693 board room, re-erected in offices of MWB, 1915-20. Beam Engine House, now empty, formerly pumping to Upper Pond. Tall central bay was atmospheric engine house by John Smeaton 1767. Enlarged symmetrically c.1818 for 2 Boulton & Watt engines. Base of previous circular brick wind pump tower adjacent, by George Sorocold, 1709.
