High Corn Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Former corn mill, powered by a waterwheel (still in situ), now converted to mixed use (retail and offices). Records show a mill on this site in the 14th century known as the 'water-corne-milne', later known as the 'soke mill'. The main body of the current mill dates from the 18th century. In the 1790s Peter Garforth adapted part of the mill to process, not corn, but rags into paper. This use lasted until the 1880s. The mill was bought by George Leatt in the 1960s who promoted the building as a seed merchants and folk museum. In 1967 he installed the current waterwheel to replace an earlier wheel that was dismantled some time around 1900.
