Description and History of Site:-
Reservoir, of about 15 ha extent, built to supply the Leeds and Liverpool canal. According to the listing description "An unusual and outstanding example of a canal reservoir being given architectural treatment." Built between 1885 and 1893 by the Leeds and Liverpool Canal Company, engineers Henry Rofe and Edward Filliter of Leeds. Constructed primarily as a source of feed water to the canal, the reservoir was formally opened in 1891. An Act of the same year also required that compensation flow of 750,000 gallons per day be provided to the Winterburn and Eshton becks. The conduit or pipeline carrying the supply water to the canal itself (at Greenberfield, qv) was completed by 1893.
