Description and History of Site:-
McDonnell p 48
"not far away is the site at Cold Cam where in Cockerdale wood in 1953 Roman Pottery Kiln was levelled by a forestry bulldozer. A trial trench in the iron slags below did not produce evidence of their date though they could be Roman working."
Quantity of iron slag whose analysis shows higher extraction than in Medieval times are found at the Spauton site
Roman or medieval. Several heaps of iron working slag some large. No finds apart from abundant charcoal and hard glossy lumps of slag under limestone. One trenched by R Close and RH Hayes.
No LiDAR data
Several iron slag heaps, some large and very overgrown, are beside a small runnel of water NE of Cockerdale House. One heap was trenched by Hayes and R. Close in 1954, but there were no finds apart from abundant charcoal. Said by Hayes (in Authy 1) to be 'Roman or Medieval'. (The site lies just south of a Romano-British kiln and possible settlement - SE 58 SW 17. The slag heaps are shown on a sketch map with that site at circa SE 53818145). (1-2)
