Description and History of Site:-
Wrought iron lamp standard erected c 1800. Originally an oil lamp was used. From 1830 Richmond Town Council paid Richmond Gas Works, established in 1821, £75 per year to light the main streets and the lamp was converted.
At the base is a stone pillar erected in about 1782 in which the remains of a water-spout or water-point can be seen and which provided a water supply to local people. Water was conveyed in a lead pipe from a cistern under the Obelisk in the Market Place and flowed freely into a stone trough. The overflow ran down Bridge Street in the River Swale. On the
top of the pillar is remains of a wrought iron lamp standard erected c1800.
