High Mill or Saw Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Very early cotton spinning mill on site of an earlier corn mill. In 1793 the cotton mill, warehouses and counting houses all under one roof were insured for £88 and the utensils, stock and goods for £2,000.
In 1804 the four storey mill had a floor area of 1,344 square yards. The spinning machinery consisted of water frames made by the owners engineers and joiners. In 1814 the frames were replaced with throstles. The new machinery was insured for £3,000 in 1816.
In 1825 a new mill was built with a 30 hp steam engine and the old mill then used for storage. By 1833 power loom weaving had been added.

The mill was later turned into a saw mill. The original partners were Peter Garforth, John Blackburn and John Sidgwick. Blackburn soon dropped out and the firm continued as Garforth & Sidgwick who were brothers-in-law. Peter Garforth senior also had an interest in cotton spinning mills in Sedbergh, Bell Busk and Bingley.
William Sidgwick took over the control of the firm about 1805 and in 1825 built the new mill. By 1833 the firm was run by J B Sidgwick.
