Description and History of Site:-
Weighing Machine House, Bog Hall, Whitby. Designed and built in 1834 by John Bolton Jnr for the horse-drawn Whitby & Pickering Railway (opened throughout in 1836), for the purpose of weighing freight to be transported on the line, primarily the volcanic "whinstone" quarried near Grosmont by the Whitby Stone Co. This ruinous building is sited beside the public footpath alongside the rail track between Whitby and Ruswarp, and is a rare surviving example of an early railway weigh-house.
