Description and History of Site:-
Tetney transmitter or beam station was built by Marconi to answer the government's challenge to provide a link between the UK and Sydney. Its associated receiving station was at Skegness.
The station proved two services; the first to Australia on 25 meters, using the call sign GBH, was established at 6.00 on 8th April 1927. The second service to India on 35 and 16 metres using the call sign GBI was established at midnight on 5/6th September 1927.
The main building remaining housed the mains powered, motor-generators for the produced the HT transmitter power supplies and the filament supplies.
There were originally eight masts. The three on the north side of the station carried the antennas for the Australia route. The bases for three 275ft (83.82m) tall masts ran along the side of Humberston Road and were spaced 650 ft (198.1m) apart. Each was mast supported a 90ft (27.43m) cross member from which triatics were strung between the towers and the antenna arrays were suspended from these.
