Harlam Hill Lock

Description and History of Site:-
Harlem is the highest lock on the River Ancholme.

Constructed as part of Sir John Rennie's Ancolme drainage scheme of 1825-44. The lower gate still has the original 1827 castings on the winch paddle and has slender iron balance beams that may be original. The upper gate has been replaced by guillotine gate.
