Fashion Street Arcade

Description and History of Site:-
Moorish Market, built 1905 by Abraham Davis. 2-storey arcade in pale red brick and terracotta, with much cement ornamentation; originally contained 63 small shops but failed. Converted into two factories, 1909. East end used by hat and cap manufacturer whilst west half taken over by Messrs Scammell and Nephew, commercial vehicle manufacturers. George Scammell was wheelwright in Fashion St, 1850 and firm, later part of BL, moved to Watford, 1958. 3- storey block of 14 bays by 6 bays deep on north side of street with yard at east end which was George Scammell's cart and van works.
