Wharf Mill, Sowerby Bridge

Caption :- Wharf Mill (centre) alongside lock number one of the Rochdale Canal, with Regulator Mill in the foreground and Lock Hill Mill in the background. Wharf mill was erected prior to 1803 by James Crossley of Lower Hollins, Warley for woollen scribbling and fulling; later run by his two sons. In 1813 the mill was converted for use as a corn mill by J. & W. Crowther, remaining in that use until 1886. Thereafter, until its demolition in 1981, it was used principally for worsted spinning.
